Export of 1.4 Tons of Black Caviar Authorized

Baku Today 29/10/2003 22:44

The national administrative body of the CITES international convention on the trade of endangered fauna and flora species, the Fish Breeding Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, has authorized the export of 1.4 tons of black caviar taken from sturgeon-like fish.
It is 15.3% of the export of black caviar authorized by CITES for 2003 (9.1 tons). This amount of the primarily canned product (tins capable of 0.5 kg to 1.8 kg are to be used as package) will be mainly exported to Germany, the Emirates, Canada, etc.

The Fish Breeding Department noted that CITES had authorized the amount of caviar for export too late, i.e. in early September. So the exporters will have a chance of selling the product next year.

Only three companies (Khazarbalig, Kaspi and Neftchala Balig) have a right to catch sturgeon-like fish in Azerbaijan.
