French Peacekeepers Kill 2 Militiamen in Congo
French peacekeepers in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo say they have killed two militiamen after coming under fire for the second time in three days.

A French military spokesman says the incident occurred Monday in the strife-torn town of Bunia. There are no other details. French soldiers also came under fire in Bunia on Saturday, but reported no casualties in that incident.
Paris is leading an international force with a mandate to protect Bunia's civilian population following a month of fighting between ethnic Lendu and Hema militias.

The force began deploying last week after the violence claimed 500 lives according to U.N. estimates. U.N. officials say the peacekeeping mission will eventually number 1,400-1,500 men.

But on Monday, a U.N. spokesman in Bunia said the situation is worsening despite the peacekeepers' presence.

Spokesman Madnodje Mounoubai said 48 people have been abducted and nine killed in Bunia in the past week.

The latest fighting began after the withdrawal of Ugandan troops who were party to a larger regional war. Amnesty International says the ethnic fighting has claimed about 50,000 lives in the past four years. The violence has created fears of even more massive loss of life.
