In St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Opticsand Advanced Computing Lab opened Technologies (Advanced Computing Lab, ACL). As it was explained today, May 27, correspondent BakuToday in Heat and Mass Transfer, a key area of the laboratory involves the use of supercomputing technology to support decision making in global emergencies, such as epidemics or forest fires, floods, criminal or terrorist threats. This is one of the 40 laboratories that are created in the Russian universities under the guidance of leading scientists, winners of a competition organized by the Ministry of Education and Science.
The Laboratory was founded on the basis of knowledge-based Institute of Computer Technology ITMO. Her head was Peter Slot – World-renowned expert in the field of supercomputing and distributed computing technologies from the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), which is one of 40 winners of the competition. ACL Lab is focused on the implementation of multidisciplinary research and development in various subject areas that require resource-intensive simulation and processing huge amounts of data. The result of the next 2 years will be the creation of hardware and software to serve as a platform for the development and operation of various early warning systems and decision support in emergency situations.
ACL educational mission includes the training of highly qualified (and Ph.D.), a world-class, including in joint doctoral programs with leading foreign universities. This year the Laboratory has already trained 20 graduate students and doctoral candidates, and in the future we plan to attract at least 10 graduate students annually.
The cost of equipment and engineering and network infrastructure is 80 million rubles. The money was drawn from various sources, including from the “Development Program ITMO for 2009-2018.” (ITMO is one of 29 Russian national research universities).
Rector ITMO Vladimir Vasilyev, who spoke at the opening of the laboratory, said that it will be not only the fundamental and applied research, and commercialization of intellectual property. In particular, this may be the creation of small innovative enterprises, including in the framework of the “Skolkovo.”
The contract signed with Peter slot, designed for 3 years, but if the laboratory will operate successfully, it will be extended for another 2 years. “We have to focus ourselves on the fact that the laboratory will work for 5 years. For us it is extremely important, because we believe that this time we can put together a team of young scientists who catch the ideas and the work that began under the leadership of Peter Slota, “- said Vladimir Vasilyev.
Recall, an open public competition for grant of the Russian government to government support of research conducted under the guidance of leading researchers in Russian universities within the framework of the Russian Federation Government Resolution № 220 of April 9, 2010, was announced June 25, 2010. For research is allocated to each winner up to 150 million rubles. 40 winners of the first round were determined in October 2010. Among the winners – two applications of Heat and Mass Transfer.
