After receiving consent to Abu Mazen for the new “French initiative”, but without waiting for a response from Mr. Netanyahu, the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy made a direct blackmail Israel, he threatened to support recognition of independence of an Arab state in Judea and Samaria, and if Abbas would declare it unilaterally. Recall: “French initiative” involves intensive negotiations on the future borders of the Arab states and their security issues that must be completed by agreement, by September of this year – before treatment Abbas at the UN for recognition of their state. Also be added that Sarkozy and President Medvedev of Russia expressed support for the latest initiative of President Obama on the establishment of an Arab state within the borders based on the “lines 1967″ (the cease-fire lines established in 1949, following Israel’s War of Independence, and lasted before a new aggression against the Arabs of Israel in June 1967 – approx.), with no amendments made by the later on the “exchange of territories”. Netanyahu’s keynote speech, delivered in Washington with much fanfare, European politicians ignore. (7kanal.com)
The Israeli government is considering participation in the peace conference, which offered to France. June 5 in the morning, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “we appreciate the peace initiative proposed by Allen Juppe and ready to discuss it with our friends in the United States.” As explained by the prime minister, it is impossible to follow to several initiatives to focus on one. These words of Netanyahu’s leading web site Walla. However, on the sidelines of the French initiative was greeted with little enthusiasm. According nana10, citing sources in diplomatic circles of Jerusalem, they opposed Israel’s participation in the conference, on the terms that are proposed in France. But how to solve the problem is unclear. The more that members of the Palestinian Authority, on the contrary expressed a desire to take part in peace talks initiative, launched by France was discussed in the morning at the ministerial meeting of Likud. According to the Minister of Education, Gideon Saar, the initiative was problematic for Israel. It contains two items, which Israel rejected, despite the fact that they were heard in the speech of President Obama. First, the requirement to establish national boundaries on the 1967 borders before negotiations began. And the second – to postpone the discussion of the status of refugees. (News.israelinfo.ru)
On Sunday the ministerial meeting of the Likud discussed an initiative put forward by France. Gideon Saar, the Minister of Education expressed his disagreement with the French proposal. According to him, “This initiative is problematic for Israel, because it contains two items that we and Prime Minister earlier rejected, despite the fact that they appeared in the speech of President Obama.” As noted by Gideon Saar, the requirement to establish before the negotiations on the basis of state boundaries of the situation that preceded the Six Day War, is totally unacceptable. However, other key issues such as refugees, are not considered. Thus, it appears that Israel, having gone to territorial concessions, then faced with the problem of infiltration of Palestinian refugees on its territory. “We must insist on the principles of our policy: to discuss all issues related to final settlement, without having to declare the results before the start of negotiations”, – quotes the statement by Minister Gideon Saar press service of the Ministry of Education. The clashes on the Syrian-Israeli border in the “day Nahsy” (the anniversary of the Six-Day War), which killed dozens of Syrians and hundreds were wounded, a significant coverage in Arab media. At the same time, it should be noted that the emphasis June 5th leading Arab television stations, “Al Jazeera” and “Al Arabiya” was not on the events at the border between Syria and Israel, and the situation in Yemen, which recently was seriously wounded President ( he is currently hospitalized in Saudi Arabia). In second place were the events in Libya, where a civil war in which, on the opposition forces engaged NATO. And only in third place were the events in Syria, and primarily focused on clashes in the north between the opposition and the Syrian army, that killed dozens of people. As of the morning June 6, “Al Jazeera” in the first place sends a report from Saudi Arabia, where the wounded president of Yemen. In the second place, “Al Jazeera” broadcast a report about clashes between the Syrian opposition and the army, loyal Bashar Assad (and obviously not liking the TV channel al-Assad on the side). Third position: NATO aircraft strikes against targets in Libya. Then came reports that a U.S. drone attacked the terrorists in Waziristan, that Obama has called for Germany to play a greater role in Libya. And only then discusses developments in the Israeli-Syrian border. Accents leading Arab media suggest that al-Assad failed to achieve its objective: to distract attention from events in Syria. However, the Western media to a greater extent than Arab, pay attention to Syrian provocations on the border with Israel. (Newsru.co.il)

June 5, Foreign Minister gave an interview to radio station “Echo of Moscow”, in which he described his vision of a possible solution to the Middle East conflict. According to him, the decision on the status of Jerusalem “will not be without territorial demarcation and without solving the refugee problem” – he said. The minister said that in Russia believe that western Jerusalem must remain Israel, East Jerusalem Palestinian Authority goes away, and the “holy places, perhaps, can only be under international control.” The Foreign Minister stressed that Jerusalem can not be only an Israeli or Palestinian only. He noted that in fact there is already separation – the Jews living in the western part of the city, the Arabs – in the east. “Work will only be reflected in inter-state format that already exists in the form of confessional. This should be part of an overall settlement, when Palestine and Israel agree on the borders of mandatory swaps” – he said. Turning to the questions of settlements Lavrov took the pro-Israeli stance. “Nobody expects that Israel will withdraw and destroy for a large settlement, but the Palestinians should get in return something close to what is currently Israel will take,” he said. Recall that last week met Sergei Lavrov and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategic Planning Moshe (Boogie) Ya’alon. Concerning the Middle East conflict, Lavrov noted that “the Russian side reaffirmed its principled position in favor of continuing the collective efforts of the international community, particularly the Quartet of international mediators, in order to find compromises and to restore confidence between Israelis and Palestinians …” (Izrus.co.il)
Jerusalem Post newspaper published an article June 4, Daniel Rubenstein, entitled “Quiet mini-return of Palestinians had already begun”
In the spring, from Passover to Shavuot, on the main highway connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv to the coast, particularly lively: tourists and other travelers – Jews, Christians and Muslims – traditionally sent to the holy places. Highway, winding, rising from the intersection Shaar and Guy, that at the foot of the hills, passing the village, inhabited by Israeli Arabs – Abu Ghosh, Ein Nekubu, Ein Rafa – surrounded by Jewish areas, old and new. Over all this is Castel – the highest point in the region. Region for thousands of years was of great importance. At the time of hanaaneytsev, Judah, Greek and Roman conquerors, the first Muslim kingdom in times of the Crusaders and later Islam, the Ottoman Empire – is always there lay the path to Jerusalem. In recent years there have been remarkable changes here – around historic monuments and sites of recent excavations have grown rapidly hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, shopping centers, parks and resorts. Impressive two churches – ancient and new, annual festivals of classical music, and even in the restaurant at a gas station paid to place the sculptures, drawings and paintings depicting Elvis Presley. Among these miracles happen and some interesting political developments. You can probably talk about the “mini-return of Palestinians.” Arab village Tsova (Tsuba), located at the top of Mount Castel, on the south side, in 1948, during the War of Independence, almost all of its inhabitants fled. Since then, however, whatever the appearances of the right to return, or its absence, some of those residents returned. They settled not just in the same place where previously, but took a small portion of their former land on the mountain, below the ruins of the old village, in the direction of Abu Gosh. Their new village called Tsovy refugees from Ein Rafa. To understand this unique case, we must return in 63 years ago – in April and May 1948 – the War of Independence. In those days the fate of the approaches to Jerusalem and the city itself. In the winter, in early 1948, the Jews have suffered great losses. The British ruled Palestine yet, but it’s mandate came to an end, and guerilla units on both sides carried out brutal action, causing major impact on traffic. Jewish convoys were unable to break through to the isolated Jewish settlements. Jewish Jerusalem, where more than one hundred thousand people, was in a tight siege. Near the mountains, in an area called Sha’ar and Guy (in Arabic – the Bab el-Wad), the main road to Tel Aviv was blocked. Was interrupted water supply of Jerusalem, the city experienced an acute shortage of food and water. The besieged Jewish neighborhoods and settlements in Jerusalem and elsewhere were close to having to surrender to troops of the local Arabs and the Arab Liberation Army, composed of Iraqi and Syrian volunteers under the command of Fawzi al-Kaukdzhi. By the end of the British Mandate, Gush Etzion, south of Jerusalem that, as well as Atarot and Neve Yaakov – the north – have surrendered to the Arabs. The Arabs also conquered the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, as well as a small Jewish neighborhood and Simon, Tzadik, north of Old Town. The turning point came in early April 1948, when the Jews received from Czechoslovakia (under Soviet guidance) a significant military aid, including weapons and ammunition. David Ben-Gurion, who became soon the first Prime Minister of Israel, told the Jewish troops begin to break through the siege of Jerusalem. The campaign, known as “Operation Nachshon” was held in heavy fighting throughout the mountain road – especially in a small area near Castel. Most of the villages near Castel was occupied by Jewish forces. Their inhabitants fled. The Arabs were only in the large village of Abu Ghosh, where they found shelter as refugees from the nearby village of Beit Nekuba. Residents Tsovy, located at the top of the Castel, the ruins of the fortress of the Crusaders, also fled – mostly in East Jerusalem, and then – to the north and east of Jordan. There were only 18 members of the family Barhoum, who owned a ravine on the slopes of Abu Ghosh, near Tsovy, one or two houses. From the preserved information about those days, the family hid Barhoum in these houses and did not suffer during the “Nakba” – the defeat and flight of Palestinians in 1948. Several years ago, a native of this village, Mohammed Saeed Rahman has published a book in Arabic “Tsova. Memoir of the Jerusalem village,” which he described the events of April 7-8, 1948. Many historians have written: If they needed to choose a date for the start of the campaign fighting for Jerusalem, it would be best that night, when the Arab side, called “jihad” (“Al-Jihad al-mukadis”) have tried to discourage Jews Castel. Troops Abd al-Qader al-Husseini – Chief of the “Holy Jihad” – have settled in the area Tsovy then attacked Castel. Al-Husseini, a prominent military commander, was the scion of a noble family, the son of the head of the Arab Executive Committee, and a relative of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. Several hours before the attack on Castel, he returned from Damascus, where he tried to persuade the Arab League Military Committee to supply him with arms and ammunition. He refused, saying that you should wait six weeks before the departure of the British and the entry into Palestine of regular Arab armies, which would destroy the Jewish state, whose arrival was expected shortly. Enraged al-Husseini returned to lead the effort to return the Castel. “Kastel – This is Jerusalem”, – he said, implying that anyone who owns Castel, owns Jerusalem. The attack was repulsed. Al-Husseini was expecting at the command post in Tsove, but with the dawn lost patience and began to climb the mountain – to see what happened to his people. Near the top he was shot by Jewish soldiers. At first he was considered missing, but soon spread the news in the region of his death, thousands of Arabs rushed to the Castel, Jewish forces attacked and killed dozens of defenders. The death of al-Husseini, the Arab population plunged into despair. The next night the men of Jewish paramilitary organizations IZL and Lehi attacked the village of Dir Yassin, near the western outskirts of Jerusalem, killing dozens of people. These 24 hours, in which al-Husseini was killed and carried out the attack on Dir Yassin, decided the fate of the war. During these hours 18 family members were hiding near a rivulet Barhoum Ein Rafa, in the hollow below the abandoned village. After the founding of Israel, many homes were destroyed in Tsove on its ruins, and on lands belonging to her kibbutz was founded Palm Tsova. Refugees from the nearby village of Beit Nekuba received plots of land in a ravine near the village of Abu Ghosh, near the Ein Rafa, where he founded the village, now known as Ein Nekuba. And what happened to the 18th of family Barhoum? Gradually, they were able to gather again, most of those who fled in 1948 and was now living in Jordan. Of course, they returned and settled in Ein Rafah, not all former residents Tsovy, but now live here about thousands of former refugees. Part of this amount was the result of natural increase, but the majority of people – those who returned, having obtained permission from Israeli authorities in the framework of family reunification. That is, children of refugees living in Jordan, entered into marriages with the families of Ein Rafa, moved to Israel and even received Israeli citizenship. The situation is unusual: in Ein Rafa able to return some of those who fled from Arab villages destroyed during the War of Independence. Ein Rafa, located on the former lands of the village Tsova, almost never mentioned in the news. Almost nothing bad happens here. There were no signs of antagonism with Israel. And in the nearby villages of Ein Nekuba and Abu Gosh, that just across the road, you do not feel any animosity. In this block of three Arab villages – about ten thousand inhabitants. Only a few are employed in agriculture, most of the works in Jerusalem. Among them are many – with higher education, businesses, merchants and contractors. Recently, several Jewish families rented houses in these villages and have become partners in the thriving Abu Ghosh businesses – restaurants and entertainment. If traveling along the highway Jerusalem – Tel Aviv, to look out the window, it is easy to see the impressive home of the three villages. Almost all of them – in good condition, built of stone, the village reminiscent of affluent urban neighborhoods. They are located around the national park Ein Chemed, at the foot of Castel. On the ruins of Castel is a memorial in honor of 1948, below the hill to the west, visible debris from the truck convoys trying to break into the besieged Jerusalem. From the old village Tsova leaving only the ruins of several houses built on the ruins of a fortress once the Crusaders. The ancient olive trees and oaks indicate the place where once was the village cemetery, and travelers like to stand near a brook and an ancient irrigation system. In media stroll though rumors held by Barack Obama’s plan, under which the Palestinians give up their right to return. But while the shadow of Palestinian refugees in 1948 hangs over the chance to make peace, some of them have goals – and returned to their land. (“Jerusalem Post”)

Speech by Benjamin Netanyahu in the U.S. Congress, where the Israeli prime minister dared to say the obvious truth – the so-called “boundary of the 67th year” can not be protected, have caused outrage in the Western press. Netanyahu’s critics point out that Israel was defeated in several wars and 67-year, and so protection is even more “narrow” Israel is possible. Critics of Mr. Netanyahu, and theorists’ boundaries of 67 years, “usually located at a comfortable distance from Israel. Tough reality is that Israel, a country with a small regular army surrounded by enemies with large regular armies. These enemies can agree on and deliver an unexpected blow to Israel, as has happened repeatedly in the past. Netanyahu is the author of a new concept. The inability to protect the borders that existed before June 1967 indicated the deputy defense minister and then foreign minister Yigal Alon Israel in the early 70s. Most clearly, he presented his arguments in an article published in Foreign Affairs magazine in 1976. He pointed out that the so-called “border 67 years” are nothing more than a cease-fire line and were never considered as final political borders. Alon statement quoted U.S. Ambassador to the UN Arthur Goldberg in 1967. Goldberg noted that these limits “is neither safe nor recognized.” The famous UN resolution 242 calls for “withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict.” The resolution, however, does not suggest that Israel must evacuate all occupied territory. The resolution also says nothing about “the boundaries of a 67-year” and only indicated the need to “create a secure and recognized borders.” The plan Alon, in the territory of Israel was supposed to be a big part of the Jordan Valley. Because this area rises to 2,000 meters above sea level, it represents a significant natural barrier that small Israeli forces will be able to hold for a while, so far there will be a general mobilization. Control over the Jordan Valley also allows Israel to prevent the smuggling of weapons, ammunition and missiles in the West Bank. Some critics of Mr. Netanyahu indicated that the main threat to Alon was an opportunity to the Iraqi Army through Jordanian territory, a threat that, according to critics ceased to exist, along with Saddam Hussein. Israeli strategic planning, however, can not be restricted to the realities of 2011. No one can know, and no one can guarantee what position will Iraq after five years. It can be a rich oil satrapy or even democracy – a friend and ally in the region. It can also turn into armed to the teeth Iranian satellite, fanning the flames of war in the region. Characteristically, the Saudis do not rely on the haphazard and Arab solidarity, and build a fortified areas and fences on the border with Iraq. In the event that a natural barrier of the Jordan Valley, Israel was covering the past four decades will cease to exist, the kingdom of Jordan will become a tempting target for jihadists around the world. Jordan can become a bridge linking the “Al Qaeda” with Palestinian terrorists in Iraq. At the height of the civil war in Iraq, in 2007, jihadists have already tried to start recruiting in the border region Hebrides. Then attempt to create a Jordanian outpost to throw in the West Bank was controlled, but who said that this attempt – the last? (Mignews.com)
