PACE to discuss “the Belarusian issue” 25 January

At the winter session of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (pace) 25 January to consider the situation of human rights, civil and political freedoms in Belarus in the year 2011. Described in the schedule of sessions of the Council of Europe.

In the course of the session, scheduled to elect a new President of the PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY and the Council of Europe Commissioner for human rights. Agenda 25 January provides for discussion of the human rights situation in Belarus in the year 2011. The parliamentarians plan to consider the report of the rapporteur PAZ Andrés Herkelâ, as well as the report of the representative of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and human rights Mariluizy Beck.

The Secretariat of the Council of Europe, in particular noted that the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and human rights expresses its deep concern at the deterioration of the situation with democracy in Belarus and condemns “the increasingly repressive approach” of the Belarusian authorities to express dissent. The Committee fully supports the preservation and strengthening of sanctions by the EU for Belarus to complete liberation and rehabilitation of all political prisoners.

It also noted that PACE should maintain the suspension of special guest status for Belarus National Assembly prior to the introduction of a moratorium on the death penalty. According to the members of the Committee, the Assembly must intensify and strengthen support for civil society in Belarus, independent media and opposition.

As reported BakuToday, the PACE press service 15 December reported that PACE political Committee is concerned at the deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus. It is stated that at the meeting of the Commission discussed the PACE Rapporteur on Belarus report Andrés Herkelâ and the draft resolution, which will be presented for discussion at the January session of the Assembly.
