President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and the State Minister of Turkey on EU matters Ègemen Bagyš at the Brussels press conference addressed the French bill criminalizing the denial of the Armenian genocide and the reaction of Ankara and the international community on the issue. Martin Schulz said that Turkey must face its own history.
“As a German, I am familiar with the history of their own country. My advice to the authorities of Turkey remains the same: you must look at the person’s own history and allow for its independent study. If, on the basis of studies that there is genocide, Turkey should admit it. But first the case of Turkey. However, I respect the independence of the French Parliament adopted the law “, said the head of the European Parliament. Schulz stressed that he was proud of the fact that Germany has about 60 years, recognizes its history, thus freeing the generation of responsibility and guilt for the last event: “to be open about their past, the best way in the future.”
Ègemen Bagyš, in turn, expressed the need to create a Commission of historians that studied the issue, stressing that the policy must create the future rather than dwell in the past.
He recalled that in 2005, Turkey expressed its willingness to establish an International Commission of historians and scholars, but Armenia had not given consent, reports the Yerkir Media TV channel.
