Ukraine wants to send peacekeepers to Karabakh

27/05/2005 02:23

Ukraine may send peacekeepers to Nagorno Karabakh, Azerbaijan's state news agency AzerTaj reported quoting an official from the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council.

Samui villas is a world-class luxury villa resort situated on one of Thailand's most sought after island destinations. The Council secretary Piotr Poroshenko said that just like in all zones with 'frozen conflicts', Ukraine's peacekeeping mission may promote the country's influence 'as a leader in the region'.

"First, both conflicting sides should trust Ukraine so that it can become a guarantor of peace in the region."

The Chairman of Ukrainian Supreme Rada (parliament) national security and defense committee Georgi Kriuchkov said that Ukrainian peacekeepers may be sent to Nagorno Karabakh only if 'both sides' - Azerbaijan and Armenia - agree on this, and taking into account Ukraine's future relations with the two countries.

First deputy commander of Ukrainian ground troops Valeri Frolov said that the country's Defense Ministry can train and send peacekeepers to Nagorno Karabakh within two months, if the parliament passes a relevant decision.

Armenia controls Karabakh and seven surrounding regions equal to roughly 14 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally-recognized territory.
