90% of Armenian citizens get their information through television, and only 7% – over the Internet. This was reported in a presentation on July 12 in Yerevan versatile study “Alternative Information Resources 2011″ her party, the director of the Caucasus Research Resource Center – Armenia Heghine Manasyan.
It is noteworthy that 95% prefer domestic TV channels and 70% – Russian TV channels. This, according to Manasyan pretty strong competition between domestic and Russian TV channels. 77% of respondents watching Public TV of Armenia, 47% – Second Channel (H2), Armenia TV channel – 68%, 65% – Shant, 37% – RTR Planeta, 38% – Russia’s First Channel.
At the same time, 1% of the respondents do not stop and get information on so-called “word of mouth” – from neighbors, friends and acquaintances. Meanwhile, the objectivity of the information on television unconditionally believe only 8% of respondents in the newspapers – 7%, on the Internet – 13%. 45% of respondents prefer to watch on TV news programs and commentaries, 42% – feature films.
Remarkable and comments of respondents. “It seems to have created a vacuum in which citizens look silly comedy program, then listen to political news, then again – stupid comedy channel, then – again the official information. The third view is completely eliminated,” – said one respondent. Or other “on television – a virtual life and real life – a virtual life of the Internet”, “independence is worth the money”, “every media like its owner,” etc. If most of the international news TV reported, that most respondents would like to receive information of socio-economic plan: inflation, unemployment, health, education, and the army.
53% of respondents with incomplete and complete higher education, read newspapers, but in general they are read a third of the respondents. 76% read newspapers enjoy their paper versions, 7% – e, 16% – and both of them. Most of all lovers of newspapers preferred topic of sports, although most are willing to read materials on political topics. 63% media bias cause their relationships with one or another political force. However, only 12% believe social media independent source of objective information.
In 2009, only 15% had a personal computer in 2010 – at 27%. Connecting to the Internet in 2009 was 6% of the citizens, and in 2010 – at 19%. 70% of citizens from 16 to 20 years using the Internet as a whole – 30%. In Yerevan, as expected, the World Wide Web are more than in the regions – 43%, 13% – in rural areas. 73% connected to the Internet using a PC, 18% – only through mobile phones. 53% of connections via the PC is via 3G-modems and cable connections. On average, citizens use the Internet for 3 hours a day. 65% usually use social networks, and only 25% use the Internet for business purposes.
80% of social networking users prefer odnoklassniki.ru, 15% – Facebook. 88% of Internet users prefer to just chat with friends, 36% written reports, 34% – get their information, 28% – play games, 18% send a message. Only 8% use social networks to spread social and political information, and 81% – passive users. 10% is poured into online media, for the most part – the audio files.
When commenting on any social or political information online, only 4%. Only 0.2% write blogs, 7% – their reading. 66% of respondents are not interested in blogging. 60% of respondents are concerned about the security of their personal information online. They are mainly motivated by the “unhealthy” interest of employers to their personal data online. Most Internet users prefer to receive information from the Internet, since there is provided pluralism and the Internet will save you time. The Internet users prefer to use political information, social, regional and international policies.
The study was conducted with the assistance of “Eurasia” Foundation, the Yerevan Press Club, USAID and Internews-led Manana Aslamazyan. The study involved eight focus groups, NGO and media representatives, including managers.
