Washington moves in Turkmenistan discuss water issues in Central Asia

In Ashgabat, passes a three-day regional training seminar on international legal instruments in the field of transboundary water resources management, organized by the Regional Centre for preventative diplomacy for Central Asia (RCPDCA) with support from the Government of the United States, correspondent BakuToday .

As the press service of the Turkmen Government, interactive training involved representatives of ministries and departments for the protection and management of water resources in all five countries of the Central Asian region-Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, as well as international and regional consultants of the Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), International Fund for Aral Sea saving (IFAS).

“During the seminar, international consultants, UNECE will make presentations of accepted legal standards in the management of international watercourses, the basic provisions of international agreements-current water New York and Helsinki conventions (UN/ECE). The training will be considered by the legal instruments in the field of transboundary water resources, experience and international practice in this area, “said the press service of the Government of Turkmenistan.

Also stresses that in the view of Turkmenistan, all the issues associated with developing a mutually acceptable mechanism for integrated and balanced utilization of transboundary water resources, must be resolved solely on the basis of the universally recognized norms and principles of international law, taking into account the interests of all States in the region.

At the same time, the lower, in particular, Uzbekistan opposes construction of Rogun GES in Tajikistan, considering that the construction of the 330 metre dam reservoir station creates a threat to the environmental security of the region. The World Bank, which conducts the review of the Rogun GES, last summer, issued a statement opposing the construction of the first phase of the station until the international examination.
